Books, books, books

In browsing around, I uncovered the NY Times Bestseller list for Manga. Of these, 6 of them are Naruto books ... which is not a big surprise because they are in the middle of a massive "catch-up" to get much closer to the original Japanese printings. In my mind, that is a smart manuever, because there were things that I learned at a convention LAST FALL where someone went up to a man in costume and said, "My condolences." Heck of a way to find out about a character's fate, huh.

That said, my train rides have definitely driven my manga reading. So, from the list, I own or will own 8 of them and plan to read someone else's copy of the 9th. The biggest surprise to me was finding that Fruits Basket Volume 22 is the top of the list. Ahead of all 6 of the listed Naruto books. Score one for relationship drama. Of course, I bought my copy of volume 22 as an convention special advance sale before the actual street date. =D I actually now regret showing people the first episode of the anime which did a lot more stretching to work in the comedy aspects. It definitely turned some off to the whole thing, TV show and book form. Ah well, I didn't know that yet myself. The same thing happened on a lesser scale for Haruhi Suzumiya, with the 1st aired episode being an animated version of a student film which is chronologically closer to episode 8. But in that case the one episode "gag" is not even stylistically representative of the whole show. It's clearly different.

Whichever. I just need to keep track of which series have potential and which do not. There's another one I'm reading that has a 103-episode anime series to it ... but apparently crams 99% of the backstory into the first couple episodes before going all monster-of-the-week. That's a heavy indictment.

I actually love Fruits Basket. I couldn't stand waiting to find out how it ended though, so I read the scanlations on-line. -_-; Not going to prevent me from buying them though, but it will probably wait a little bit longer before I pick up the rest of them (obsessed too much with something else now. lol)

I tried showing the anime to DMc, but he just kept saying her eyes were *too* ridiculously huge and he just couldn't get past that. It distracted him way too much from the story and he couldn't get into it at all. lol =P

YAY. I have not read the last book so don't spoil it for me, but I do totally want to geek out about this series with you sometime! There are some things I read or watch that I can't convince most folks to, which makes it impossible to chat about them. And with no pirate-y birthday event this year, I missed an excuse to chat with you and DMc ... then I even slacked on writing here. Bad pookah, no biscuit.

PS: I can see how Erin's costume needed a little explaining. Then again, I remember after the panel, being busy talking cosplay with her while most of the rest of the guy contigent of our gang was distracted by bunnysuit.

Oh, and we both loved Haruhi Suzumiya (I had to show it to DMc in order to explain Erin's costume from Otakon) but I specifically *didn't* start with the "first" episode (the student film.) I showed him that one after he'd watched a few of the other episodes and knew the characters. ^_^

I was fail at editing
You see, my mistake was not pre-screening it, so I had no idea what I was getting into and had to wiki it to get some idea what the hell was going on.
