Ye Olde Book Meme

Lifted from a couple of my friends. These are the top 106 books most often marked as "unread" by LibraryThing's users (as of whenever this meme began). Bold what you have read, italicise what you started but couldn't finish, and strike through what you couldn't stand. The numbers after each one are the number of LT users who used the tag of that book. (I'll comment a few.)

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (149)
Anna Karenina (132)
Crime and Punishment (121) Liked it as a cautionary tale, IMHO.
Catch-22 (117)
One Hundred Years of Solitude (115)
Wuthering Heights (110)
The Silmarillion (104) I think this one was started by many and finished by few. It's very dry.
Life of Pi: a novel (94)
The Name of the Rose (91)
Don Quixote (91) I did a research paper on Cervantes in high school.
Moby Dick (86)
Ulysses (84)
Madame Bovary (83)
The Odyssey (83)
Pride and Prejudice (83) - I liked it more than I thought I would.
Jane Eyre (80)
A Tale of Two Cities (80) - This one was a slog.
The Brothers Karamazov (80)
Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies (79) - Probably worth reading.
War and Peace (78)
Vanity Fair (74)
The Time Traveler's Wife (73)
The Iliad (73) - Hooray for epics.
Emma (73)
The Blind Assassin (73)
The Kite Runner (71)
Mrs. Dalloway (70)
Great Expectations (70) - It wasn't my English class that had to read it, so I stopped after not too far in.
American Gods (68) - So, so excellent.
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius (67)
Atlas Shrugged (67) - I'm not an Objectivist, but I knew one in college.
Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books (66)
Memoirs of a Geisha (66) - Saw the movie, that was it.
Middlesex (66)
Quicksilver (66)

The Historian: A Novel (63)
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (63)
Love in the Time of Cholera (62)
Brave New World (61) - Saw it on the shelf in school. Left it there. Caught a synopsis by word of mouth.
The Fountainhead (61) - More Rand. Ugh.
Foucault's Pendulum (61) - Saw it on the shelf, was intrigued by the title, didn't open it.
Middlemarch (61)
Frankenstein (59) - I just couldn't finish. Not my cup of tea.
The Count of Monte Cristo (59)
Dracula (59)
A Clockwork Orange (59) - Did a paper on Anthony Burgess before I even saw the movie.
Anansi Boys (58) - Not quite as good as American Gods, but I liked it still.
The Once and Future King (57) - My mother figured I'd like Arthurian legends. I just couldn't get far enough in to get grabbed. I was intimidated by the pages, but I was young yet.
The Grapes of Wrath (57)
The Poisonwood Bible: A Novel (57)
1984 (57) - Another book I escaped school without reading.
Angels & Demons (56)
The Inferno (56) - I was enthralled, especially as I learned more of Dante's own personal politics that directly influenced his writing and imagery.
The Satanic Verses (55) - Eh. So the author was threatened, that's all I know.
Sense and Sensibility (55)
The Picture of Dorian Gray (55) - I've heard the premise, never actually read the book.
Mansfield Park (55)
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (54) - More likely to watch the movie.
To the Lighthouse (54)
Tess of the D'Urbervilles (54)
Oliver Twist(54)
Gulliver's Travels (53) - So many people stop after the Lilliputians (like my class did). I kept reading, and not surprised they didn't cover parts like the trip to Brobdingnag in class.
Les Misérables (53) - Saw the musical, years after some of my classmates obsessed over it.
The Corrections (53)
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay (52)
