And Thank You For Tech Support

Why does my stomach not like me? It'd not like I didn't eat well yesterday. I did have breakfast at 9, lunch at noon, and dinner at 10 pm, but that's because I was supposed to go out to dinner with my girlfriend after I fixed my roommate's computer. And I proceeded to chat with ISP tech support for 2 hours, getting no new knowledge I didn't already have.

Computer A was set up by their tech who did the install, and got IP address #1.
Computer B was set up by me. I got a hub and plugged the cable modem and the 2 computers into it and got it IP address #2. Everything worked fine.
Three days ago, Computer A's TCP/IP isn't working. Which is odd, because Computer B can surf the web, and Computer A can access Computer B through filesharing over IPX.
Yesterday, I achieved the great goal of wasting two hours wrangling with tech support. I proved the IP addresses can be had by either machine and that the hardware works fine. But I also proved that our two machines can now knock each other off of IP.

I'm planning on asking why the two addresses are on different subnets, and if that has anything to do with it. I should've mentioned it earlier. Bastards. And this stomachache isn't helping.

tech support.
No aspersions on your computer-using ability. None... but check out Trelath. His livejournal. Gives you an entertaining peek at the live of the people who answer the phone.

Man on the Phone
I used to be tech support myself for a while, at the University of Maryland. The first two months at the helpdesk were super lame, but then I impressed a department head and talked myself into a job being the main support for 2 whole departments. That made it a lot more hands on, as well as easier to maintain the machines and prevent most of the work.

The ISP guy bothered me just because I kept going on and off of hold, and he somehow didn't pick up on the fact that I had a clue about what was going on.

Turns out it was a problem with the cable modem itself, related to the 2 subnet thing. An installer put in a new modem Saturday (different brand) and this one works fine.

I think I was just incensed over losing an evening I'd expected to spend with my girlfriend and by the stomachache I had at the time. I will check out Trelath's journal, though.
