Pocket Compass

Packed in with an advertising junket I received today was a small compass attached to a 3 cm long carabiner by a small chain. Looks like it's intended to be key-chain size. It's the floating globe kind, that spins around and continues to point to magnetic north.

The metaphor is almost too easy, but that's partly because it's also almost too good. It even wobbles slightly when shaken before returning to point in the proper direction. I think I'll hold onto it, maybe give it to someone as one of those semi-meaningful tokens, more useful as a thought-provoking item than the actual designed purpose.

Then again, my thinking is suspect, seeing as I worked a 24-hour day, followed by 8 hours of sleep, followed by 11 hours of wakefulness and a 4-hour nap. I'm not sure if I'm back on schedule yet, but I'm more awake now than I was when I got here this morning.

I noticed that you have spades listed in your interests, and that some entries back you mention Ohio. My husband and I are avid spades players (although we prefer euchre -- if you're from Ohio, you may even know what that is), we spent two years in Ohio (Miami U - we met there in grad school), and moved to the College Park area last June. If you ever want to get together for a game, let me know - I promise we're not axe murderers :)

Ah yes, euchre. I didn't even know how to play it until I was taught on a visit to Ohio. It's really popular over there. Nothing quite throws off a well-trained spades player like throwing in a trump from another suit. =) I still don't think I'm very good at it, but probably more due to lack of practice.

Well, if you're not axe murderers, then sure, I think I could talk my wife into a game of spades at some point. We met as undergrads while she was at the University of Dayton, and ended up in Baltimore. Once the Johns Hopkins semester ends, my wife will be done with classes and have evenings again ... so let me get back to you on that in a week or two. Good spades players are a tough find.

Yeah, my husband is finishing his last week at College Park (Math Ed Ph D program - whee), so next week or thereafter would probably be better for us, too.

Do you play spades with jokers? Have you ever played 500 (not the rummy version, but the one that's supposedly midway between spades and bridge or bid whist?) It'd be nice to have some competition...
