Puzzles Puzzles Puzzles

I love a good puzzle, and when I'm frustrated by a problem at work, there's nothing so satisfying as finding the real answer behind it. That's the good part of working with computers; there is always some "reason" that things are happening, regardless.

Yesterday hit me with a really tough one, connected to using Hibernate. On the train ride on the way in, I changed my perspective and realized that one of my basic assumptions had to be false. And yes, there was something specific about those failing tests that revealed a limitation in underlying structure and was not readily apparent. Granted, now I have to deal with the aftermath of that, but I had been thinking that something was broken in the configuration based on (wrong) assumptions about the input. And it stumped me long enough that I stayed past 8 pm last night trying to figure it out.

Thank goodness I re-asserted my assumptions. I had to question someone else to the point of changing their assertions from "It's wouldn't be in there," to "It's not supposed to be there."
