You know you know a song when you see the title and immediately it's playing in your head as clearly as if it came off a CD player in your room. I have such a large musical catalogue that I can't listen to everything all the time, but I have an even bigger mental music jukebox that can instantly dredge any song from the depths and play it back.

Still, some albums are clearer than others. Queensryche's Empire? Totally one of those that's as clear as a gold-printed audiophile's copy.

Think for yourself, and feel the walls become sand beneath your feet ...

*hums to self*

I think I know what I'm going to do to keep part of my brain occupied on Sunday while the rest of me is working ... get a good stack of CDs I haven't heard in a while and play them LOUD.

soundtracks
I actually have complete soundtracks that go with particular memories. They actually play out in my head like little music videos. Its pretty cool.

...memories of my friend from high school, Dan, walking to his house after school, or hanging out up in the lighting catwalks doing set work - set to the tune of "Forever Young"...
...Scenes from my sophomore year and doing drama productions and my friends Marc, Rick and Michelle - set to the tune of "Fly to the Angels"...
...memories of when Marty and I first got together and he was still going to CCC, where we would hang out between his classes - set to "Into Your Arms"...
...memories of first meeting Alex and and the weeks that followed - set to "Anna Begins"
...all my memories of Dave, particularly those from our first few years together - immediate evoked anytime I hear a Pink Floyd song, particularly those from Wish You Were Here and Momentary Lapse of Reason...

That sort of thing. But then again, as hubby always say, I am a lyrics sponge - lyrics in songs mean a lot to me and tend to take on deep personal meaning. Even if the song wasn't one I listen to at the time of the memories, the feelings the lyrics bring out in me are often what ties them together for me. My own personal MTV of my life.

Its one of my favorite things about being in my own head. :)

You guys stink
It's just not fair. While on the rare occasion I have CD-quality song memories, for the most part, I end up with stuff stuck in my head. For the number of days, dare I say weeks, I've been wandering around work occaisonally bursting out in a chorus of "manamana" because it is stuck in my head like glue and just won't leave. It's like having an old record player skipping in your head and you just can't quite reach the needle.

Grrrr.
